The Birthsmarter Teacher Training + Certification Program is meant to launch a small number of highly-qualified, exemplary educators who are passionate about bringing Birthsmarter's curriculum, values, and mission to their local community via regular, in-person, childbirth education classes in 2026. In order to ensure your preparedness, we promise:
A comprehensive 4-month training program filled with live virtual instruction, self-paced work, a small accountability group, ample practice teaching opportunities, community building, direct access to Caprice Abowitt, Birthsmarter’s Director of Education, and Ashley Brichter, Birthsmarter’s Founder, as well as Birthsmarter's operational and marketing support as you begin teaching.
🤔 Are You Ready to Elevate Childbirth Education in Your Community?💡
The current landscape of childbirth education is failing expectant parents. Mainstream options are often outdated and biased, leaving parents overly prepared for unrealistic scenarios and making them feel that unexpected or unwanted outcomes are a personal failing. Most curriculums over-promise certain results, exclude partners, and transfer information without fostering critical thinking. Worse yet, many childbirth educator training programs don’t actually prepare people to teach—they provide basic birth knowledge but leave educators without a structured curriculum, pedagogical training, or oversight. As a result, new educators are left to piece together their own materials with little guidance, leading to inconsistent and sometimes misleading education for expectant families.
Since 2019, Birthsmarter has been working to improve birth for families and elevate families through birth. We’ve set out on a clear mission of providing unbiased, inclusive, and accessible childbirth education to as many families as possible. We’ve had the privilege of educating over 8,000 expectant parents online and in-person. In the last year alone we trained 12 new Birthsmarter educators and expanded to six new locations.
⏳ Why Now? The Urgency to Make an Impact
With an increasing demand for in-person, evidence-based, and inclusive childbirth education, now is the time to bring Birthsmarter to your community. We’ve worked diligently to craft a training program in which we can share our knowledge and resources to help a small group of dedicated and skilled individuals become exceptional educators and bring Birthsmarter’s paradigm-shifting classes to more communities throughout North America. 🚀
🎯 Who Is This Program For?
This program is ideal for self-motivated, dynamic individuals with experience in birth work, health and wellness, or education who want to:
- 🏫 Teach engaging, inclusive, and practical childbirth education classes.
- 🤝 Be part of a collaborative, supportive community of like-minded educators.
- 📚 Have access to high-quality curriculum, business mentorship, and marketing support.

❌ This is NOT for:
- Those who require micromanagement or are looking to create their own childbirth education brand.

- Those who lack the experience or presence to lead engaging group discussions. 🎤
📖 The Birthsmarter Teacher Training & Certification Program
In total, between lectures, meetings, and self-paced work this program will require ~30 hours per month from September '25 through January '26. The program includes:
- 🎓 Two Live Virtual Weekends: September 6-7 & November 1-2 from 12:30 - 6:00pm ET. These sessions will be a mix of lecture, discussion, practice teaching, and community building. Live attendance for the entirety of both weekends is mandatory in order to complete the program.
- 🖥️ 13 Virtual Lectures In addition to our weekend sessions we will host 13, ~2 hour lectures on Zoom. These will take place on Wednesdays at 12pm ET. While we hope that you’re able to attend all of these lectures live they will be recorded for anyone who needs the recording.
- 🤝 Small Group Mentorship: To integrate what you’re learning, create community, and help you hold each other accountable, you can expect to have a 60-90 minute meeting per week. We’ll have both:
- 7 instructor-led discussion and practicum sessions which will meet on Mondays September 15th, September 29th, October 13th, October 27th, November 17th, and December 1st from 8-9:30pm ET.
- Peer-led "growth group" meetings will be held the weeks of September 8th, September 22nd, October 6th, October 20th, November 3rd, November 10th, November 24th, December 1st, December 8th, December 15th, and January 12th. The default time will be Mondays at 8pm ET, but each small group can determine their own meeting time as fits the groups needs.
- Attendance at these meetings is required, however we understand that folks may have to miss 1-practicum and 1-accountability group due to various life-demands.
- 📖 Self-Paced Learning: Throughout the program you’ll be asked to spend time consuming selected readings, videos, podcasts, and research papers. You’ll be required to tour local hospitals in addition to auditing Birthsmarter classes. You will also be asked to produce a mix of written and video content.
- 🎉 Graduation & Team Teach Weekend (January 31st & February 1st): A chance to put everything into practice and connect in person! (We'll meet in NYC, SLC, or PHX and the final location will be determined + posted by June 2025. Thanks for your understanding).
👩🏫 Meet Your Instructors
This program is led by Ashley Brichter and Caprice Abowitt, experienced educators and birth professionals dedicated to transforming childbirth education.
Ashley Brichter is the Founder & CEO of Birthsmarter. Despite her experience with hundreds of families as a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, and lactation counselor – like so many, her first birth “did not go as planned.” Better for it, she founded Birthsmarter in 2019. An advocate for interdisciplinary understandings of wellbeing, Ashley is a Certified Fair Play Facilitator, speaker and thought leader for pregnancy and parenting, burnout culture, and domestic equity. Ashley sits on the board of ProNatal Fitness.
Caprice Abowitt is the Director of Education for Birthsmarter. Prior to joining Birthsmarter, she was a senior teacher and co-led Teacher Training for the Prenatal Yoga Center, the premier prenatal yoga teacher training program in New York City. She brings an invaluable perspective to perinatal education with over a decade of experience as a certified birth doula, certified yoga instructor, and former professional dancer with a passion for functional movement.
